Roy A. Varghese, CPA, CFP, iFAST Financial Pte Ltd, Singapore

As part of the first cohort of CFPs in Singapore, Roy comes from a background of accounting and corporate finance. His Accounting degrees are from Brigham Young University and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was a licensed US CPA and made a career change to financial planning in 1997. In 2002, he earned his CFP mark and embarked on a career as a licensed Financial Adviser Representative for the newly launched Singapore arm of Australian advisory firm, ipac. In his role as a salaried adviser, Roy built the largest base of clients until 2012 when ipac ceased operations in Asia. Currently, Roy is a self-employed fee-based independent adviser operating under the license of iFAST, a regional platform provider. His clients are mainly senior executives of whom two-thirds are women professionals.

I am honoured to win the inaugural PlanPlus Global Financial Planning award for CFPs who are members of the Financial Planning Association of Singapore and to be 1st Runner-up for the Asian region for 2016. The plan I submitted was written for a single woman who first engaged me in 1997. Her retirement goal was to be financially independent by age 50. She did just that in 2013 and continues to be my client. She has remained committed to her plan with an investment strategy that stretched over challenging periods including the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997, the Tech bubble, global recession of 2000-02, the Global Financial Crisis and more. This competition demonstrates the value my client gained from the Statement of Advice to the judges and reinforces the fact that a sound financial plan is a roadmap which gives clarity to issues faced by those who rely on the advice community. It is simple yet elegant and serves as a communication tool that acts as a basis for recommendations from the adviser. The document need not be long or technical – just simple enough for intelligent people to understand the process and the action plan.”
